Collection: Shanel Romain

Shanel Romain is a portrait artist from the Chicagoland area.  Although she’s primarily self-taught, the artist doesn’t hesitate to hone her skills through various art classes.  She got her start in Drawing 101 and Painting 101 while a sophomore at Western Illinois University in 2008, where she learned how to “see” as an artist. However, it wasn’t until 2020 that she stumbled across an online art course that propelled her back into painting and gave her the courage to begin again, and she hasn’t put her paintbrush down since.

Her work explores themes of faith, family, and colorism in the black community. The bold use of acrylic colors and expressive brush strokes identifies her work as eye-catching while communicating healthy emotions like hope and joy beyond the canvas.
